Thanks for the reply, an administrator said he had moved this question to this place. I have tried all your standard solutions prior to this note and none of them have worked. Your assessment of nothing is correct.
There is no error message and nothing is downloaded. To download eset I did the download procedure on ie and nothing happened after 2 minutes. I did the same procedure on firefox and was successful within seconds. I'm an IT programmer so I recognize this as a problem isolated to ie There are other blogs out there with tabs problems and I believe the people in trouble are not noticing other things because they are not trying to download so are not seeing these problems.
In the meantime I'm having no problems with firefox and I can function until Microsoft finds and fixes this problem. Please let me know when a patch is available. If you have other solutions please add them. I converted it from a Discussion to a question later in the day.
I'll move the question over to the IE forum at this point since I'm fairly certain that this is an IE issue and has nothing to do with malware or a virus. At this point I believe what might be really helpful is a procedure on how to remove IE11 from windows 7.
That way I can download and install IE 10 and be assured that it will work. This thread is locked. You can follow the question or vote as helpful, but you cannot reply to this thread. Begin with a thorough scan When faced with an IE hijacking, you should first scan the computer for viruses, Trojans, adware, and spyware. It's highly likely that one of these items is the hijacker. Unfortunately, I have yet to discover a single program that effectively scans for every potential form of spyware, adware, virus, and Trojan. I therefore recommend using several different programs. I know it's time consuming to download all these utilities and perform a separate full-system scan with each, but this is a critical step in the troubleshooting process.
Scan for viruses first. My antivirus program of choice is ViRobot Expert from Hauri. Although Hauri is a relative unknown in the United States, it has been a leading antivirus program in Asia for many years. ViRobot Expert will completely repair the damage from many viruses that Norton and McAfee will only quarantine or delete. In fact, my father-in-law was running McAfee—with the latest updates.
ViRobot Expert instantly caught four viruses that McAfee had missed. Another reason I recommend using ViRobot for this particular problem is that ViRobot Expert not only scans for viruses, but also scans for common hacker tools. Now that the system is virus free, it's time to scan for adware with a utility such as PestPatrol which also removes spyware or my personal favorite, which is Ad-aware from Lavasoft. After you have scanned the system for virus, adware, and spyware, reboot and try to change IE's home page.
If you're still unable to do so, then it's likely the hijacker has modified the Windows registry or configured a malicious group policy. Before we begin Warning: The following section involves editing your system registry.
