International friendship program

Participants may make specific requests about matching preferences, but an important part of the program is open-mindedness and flexibility. Thus, if requests cannot be fulfilled, participants are asked to be flexible. Matching is based on hobbies, special interests, etc. Friendship Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and can be individuals, couples, or families. I have learned first hand how committed they are to their careers and improving their lives while confirming that people the world over have so much in common in their core values and motivations".

I was lucky to work with four students from around the world. If you wish to offer to pay for activities or meals, that is welcome but not expected. International students are enrolled in classes at Appalachian State — some will complete their entire degree at ASU, while others are only visiting ASU for a semester or two.

Most international students are individuals in their early- to mids. International scholars are visiting professors, researchers, or graduate students from outside the United States at Appalachian State. They may have families of their own also living with them locally.

You can indicate whether you would prefer to be paired with a student or a scholar on our online form. However, if you do speak another language, this is a great opportunity to practice with a native speaker!

We can and do run short of students or families. Keep in mind that an effort is made to match early applicants first. Ordinarily families make the first contact with their student, but after several days a student can initiate contact. From after that first contact, the parties continue on to build friendship!
